Some moves do not need a moving truck. They need three trained people, a set of dollies and a plan for getting a sleeper sofa down a stairwell without taking the drywall with it. That is what hourly moving labor is for, and it is one of the flexible service levels Premier Movers offers alongside full-service and truck-only moves. Our Jacksonville moving company supplies the crew, the equipment and the coordinator, and you supply the rental truck, the portable container or the storage unit. Tell us what needs lifting and the estimate is free.
What hourly moving labor includes, and what it does not
Labor-only service covers the physical work of a move: carrying, lifting, stair work, building a load that will survive the drive, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and protecting the pieces that need it. It does not cover transportation. Premier Movers crews arrive fully equipped with blankets, dollies and wrap, so you are not renting pads at the truck counter. Packing materials such as boxes and tape are billed separately from labor, which means you pay only for the supplies you actually use.
| Included with an hourly crew | Arranged separately by you |
|---|---|
| Trained, uniformed, background-checked movers | The rental truck, trailer or portable container |
| Moving blankets, dollies and stretch wrap | Fuel, mileage and tolls |
| Loading, unloading and in-home moving | Driving the vehicle to the destination |
| Furniture disassembly and reassembly | Boxes, tape and packing materials, billed separately |
| Floor, doorway and corner protection | The container or storage unit rental agreement |
| A dedicated move coordinator | Long-distance transportation of the shipment |
Which service level should you actually book?
Hourly labor is one of three ways to buy a move from Premier Movers, and the cheapest option on paper is not always the cheapest once the day is over. The question is who is responsible for the vehicle and for the outcome.

Who actually shows up when you book moving labor
The weak point in labor-only moving everywhere is who gets sent. Premier Movers staffs every job with its own trained, uniformed, background-checked employees rather than casual day labor, and the person who takes your booking is the coordinator who confirms your access details and handles any schedule change. The company has worked out of Jacksonville’s Southside since 2020, has completed moves for more than 2,000 clients and holds a 4.8 rating on Google. It is fully insured and registered with the state as Florida Mover Registration IM 3668, operating under USDOT number 3914973. Both numbers are public, and you can check them before you book.

How an hourly labor booking works
- Tell us the job. Home size, floor, stair count, the distance from where the truck can legally park to your door, and anything unusually heavy or awkward.
- Get it in writing. Florida law requires a mover to give you a written contract and estimate, signed and dated, before any moving or accessorial service begins. Yours itemizes labor, materials and any specialty handling.
- Reserve access ahead of the date. Elevator, loading zone, gate code, building move hours and, where a property requires it, a certificate of insurance.
- Work the clock. The crew arrives at the agreed start time fully equipped and loads or unloads to your instructions. You keep the keys and the driving.
How long does a labor-only job take?
Time is what you are buying, so it is worth estimating honestly before you book rather than hoping. Rental-truck operators publish a rule of thumb that holds up well in practice: add roughly an hour for each flight of stairs, and about thirty minutes for every twenty-five feet between the truck and the door. A fully packed studio at street level is a short job. A two-bedroom on a third-floor walk-up at the far end of a breezeway is not. Loading generally takes longer than unloading, because a load has to be built tight enough that nothing shifts on the road.
The things that most often push an hourly job past its estimate are avoidable:
- Boxes that are still being packed when the crew arrives
- Loose items with no container, which have to be handled one at a time
- Furniture that turns out to need disassembly nobody mentioned
- An elevator shared with other residents and never reserved
- A truck parked further from the door than expected
- A heavy specialty item discovered in the garage on the day

When labor only is the wrong choice
Hourly labor is the least expensive way to move when the conditions are in your favor. In a few situations it is the wrong tool, and we would rather say so at the estimate than on the morning of the move.
- A heavy specialty item is involved. Safes, pianos, pool tables and hot tubs each need their own equipment plan and their own crew size.
- A full household has to be out on a deadline. A local move or a full residential move puts the truck and the crew on the same schedule.
- The fragile contents are not packed. Packing services are available in full or in part, with materials billed separately.
- There is a gap between closing dates. Storage services are secure and climate controlled, for short or long terms.
- The move leaves the region. Long distance moving is quoted differently from hourly work.
If you are not sure which applies, the coordinator preparing your estimate will tell you plainly. It is a shorter conversation than a failed moving day.
