A slate pool table is not one object. It is a frame, three slabs of stone, a set of bolted rails, a stretched cloth and a pile of hardware that only plays correctly when all of it goes back together in the right order and is levelled properly. Premier Movers handles pool table moving across Jacksonville and Northeast Florida as a specialty job and takes the rebuild as seriously as the carry. As a licensed and insured full-service moving company, we move tables on their own and inside larger household moves. Send us the table’s size and make and we will explain what the job involves.

Why a slate table cannot be moved in one piece
The equipment standards explain the reason. Tournament-grade tables are built with three pieces of slate at least one inch thick, mounted to a wooden frame of at least three quarters of an inch and secured to the base with bolts or screws. Slate is strong in compression and unforgiving in a twist. Lift or drag an assembled table and the load travels through the frame into the slabs and into the seams between them. Individual slabs commonly weigh between 150 and 250 pounds, which is why the crew, rather than the table, is what has to be sized to the job.
| Element | What the specifications require | Why it matters in a move |
|---|---|---|
| Slate bed | Three pieces, at least 1 inch thick | Slabs are separated and carried individually, never as an assembled bed |
| Slate frame | Wooden frame at least 3/4 inch, attached to the slate | Adds weight and needs edge protection in transit |
| Playing surface | Twice as long as it is wide | An 8-foot table is a 44 by 88 inch surface, which sets the clearance you need |
| Flatness | Within 0.020 inch lengthwise and 0.010 inch across the width | The tolerance the rebuild has to return to |
| Slate joints | In the same plane within 0.005 inch after levelling and shimming | Five thousandths of an inch, which is why levelling is its own craft |
| Deflection | No more than 0.030 inch under a 200 lb load at the center | Why the frame has to be square and fully supported |

What we do, and where a table mechanic takes over
Premier Movers moves pool tables and can reassemble them at the new location. For slate tables we recommend professional releveling afterwards, carried out by a billiards mechanic. That is a deliberate limit rather than a gap in the service. Returning a three-piece slate bed to a five-thousandths-of-an-inch joint tolerance is specialist work with specialist tools, and a moving crew that tells you otherwise is guessing at your expense.
The company has moved households and heavy specialty items across Jacksonville since 2020, is fully insured, and is registered as Florida Mover Registration IM 3668 with USDOT number 3914973. Awkward, concentrated loads are the same category of work as safe moving, and they are quoted the same way: measured first, then scheduled, with the plan built on confirmed information rather than assumptions made after the crew arrives.
How a pool table move runs, start to finish
- Survey and measure. Table size and make, ball return or drop pockets, the route from the room to the truck, doorway widths, stair turns and the destination floor.
- Strip the table. Pockets off, rails unbolted and kept with their own hardware, cloth removed from the slate.
- Separate the slate. Fasteners removed, seam filler broken along the joints, each slab lifted individually and padded.
- Break down the frame. Legs and body disassembled, every piece of hardware bagged and labeled.
- Load and transport. Slabs carried and secured individually, with the frame, rails and hardware protected separately.
- Rebuild at the destination. Frame assembled and squared, slate set and fastened, cloth and rails refitted, pockets returned.
- Level to specification. Final levelling and shimming by a billiards mechanic, to the tolerances the table was built to.

What happens to the cloth
Cloth is the part most likely to need replacing rather than reusing, and how it was fitted decides that. Cloth stapled to the slate liner can often come off in one piece and go back on. Cloth glued directly to the slate usually cannot, and forcing it produces a torn bed you will be replacing anyway. If the cloth is already worn or stretched, replacing it while the table is apart avoids paying for the same teardown twice.
Moving a table inside the same home, or into storage
Not every pool table move involves a change of address. Tables get moved for new flooring, a room reconfiguration, a garage conversion or a remodel, and the process does not change: a slate table is taken apart even when it is only going twenty feet across the same room. Sliding it puts the entire load through the legs and the frame, which is exactly what the specifications assume will never happen.
If the table has to sit somewhere between projects, climate-controlled storage is the right choice in this climate. Slate should be stored on edge and supported rather than stacked flat, and wooden frames, rails and cloth do badly in unconditioned Florida heat and humidity.

Where we move pool tables, and what else can be done the same day
Game rooms in Northeast Florida tend to live in bonus rooms, converted garages and second floors, which is why a pool table job so often comes with a second heavy item in the same house. Premier Movers can schedule the table alongside safe moving, piano moving, hot tub moving, packing services or a full residential move, and can arrange storage when the dates do not align.
We cover Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, including Orange Park, Fleming Island, Baymeadows, Mandarin and St. Johns, with the full list on our service areas page.
What a pool table move costs
Local work is priced by the hour, based on crew size and the scope of the job. For a pool table the variables are the table’s size and construction, whether it has a ball return system, the stairs and turns along the route, the carry distance to the truck, the destination floor, and whether a second specialty item is moving the same day. Florida law requires a written contract and estimate, signed and dated by both parties, before any moving or accessorial service begins. Premier Movers quotes free, itemizes the work, bills materials separately from labor and offers discounts for off-peak dates and flexible scheduling.
